Maintenance - Coilovers
Cleaning coilovers!
We often get questions about locking rings that are stuck during adjustment. It is easy to avoid it by being careful with the cleaning and maintenance of the shock absorbers. Something that many skip, unfortunately.
It is no more difficult than washing the outside of the car, but it takes a little longer as you have to remove the wheel. We recommend that you clean and maintain every time you change wheels (winter -> summer & summer -> winter), when they need to be adjusted (most important) and once during the season.
When changing the wheels, half the work comes for free since the wheels are gone anyway. The easiest way to do it during the season is to washe a shock absorber every time you wash the car in July. Then it doesn't feel as cumbersome!
- Remove the wheel
- Remove the coilover cover
- Rinse off the worst dirt with water
- Use a Prewash/Rim cleaner (Avoid the piston rod, the damascus usually protects this but avoid as much as possible)
- Use a rim brush to dissolve what is still stuck
- Rinse off all the chemicals
- Wipe the shock absorber completely dry
- Lubricate the thread with Coilover grease
- Spray Silicone spray on other parts of the shock absorber to facilitate cleaning next time (Be careful not to get anything on the brake disc!)
- Put back the coilover cover
- Mount the wheel
