Chassis - The advantages of Polyurethane bushings
Why should you drive with Polyurethane bushings?
Polyurethane is a plastic that has been with us for various purposes for over 30 years. In recent years, however, people have learned to modify this plastic to properties that make it very useful for both commercial vehicles and for cars that are only used for track driving and competition. Bushings are one of the parts of a car that are subjected to the most stress. They must withstand all this stress without any service or lubrication whatsoever. Ungrateful is just the first name!Bushings are usually made in a rubber material made from natural substances which unfortunately gets softer with age. This means that they are unable to withstand the load that is placed on them in the same way after only a few years. The result is a car that loses its stiffness and driving characteristics as time goes on.
This is precisely the biggest reason why you can tell the difference between a car that rolled straight out of the garage and one that has been driven for 3-4 years. The car feels a little less direct when cornering and braking. Another negative effect on it is that tire wear becomes much more noticeable!
Polyurethane can be made 25-30% harder than rubber but at the same time retain the properties of absorbing sound which is otherwise a problem when changing to harder bushings. It offers the advantage of giving your car better handling while still maintaining comfort!
