5 frequently asked questions about car brakes
- Dust-free brake pads, are there any?
Absolutely! The pads then have a friction surface made of a ceramic material and several manufacturers have these. Some examples of this are EBC Redstuff and HAWK Performance Ceramic.
- Brake fluid, when and why?
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means that it can absorb water. When there are temperature differences in the brake system, condensation is created, which the brake fluid absorbs. In the long run, this causes the boiling point of the brake fluid to be lower and you risk having boiling brakes earlier, which in turn causes you to lose braking effectiveness. Therefore, it is extra important to keep an eye on and change your brake fluid more often when driving on a track, but even for street driving, it is important to change brake fluid at regular intervals. Many car manufacturers advocate every two years when the car is driven in normal traffic. We recommend at least once a season for cars that are driven on a track and track days. This way, you minimize the risk of ending up in the sand trap because the brake fluid has boiled. Also invest in a brake fluid like Motul RBF 600 to get an even higher boiling point than regular brake fluid.
- Vibrations indicate bad discs?
Vibrations in the brakes often indicate that the discs are bad and need to be replaced. However, it can also indicate that the brake pads have become too hot and parts of them are sticking to the disc. The latter can be remedied by braking hard a few times to get rid of the burnt parts. However, if the discs are bad and have therefore become warped, replacing the discs is the only solution.
- Time for a break change, how do you know if it's the front or rear?
Most pads are now equipped with wear indicators. If it is not electronic and shows a light on the display, it is usually an acoustic one. The acoustic wear indicator is a metal plate that rests against the disc when the pad starts to wear out. This way you can hear if the pads are starting to wear out. Otherwise, a visual check is always the best. One recommendation is to look at the pads every time you wash the rims. Then you are there anyway! When the discs start to go bad, you often get a vibration. To easily rule out whether it is front or rear, you can go out and brake. If you feel the vibrations in the steering wheel, it is front, but if there is a vibration that is felt in the seat/butt, it is rear.
- Squeaking? Bad pads or sports?
Squealing and noise from the brakes are usually associated with the pads starting to wear out. However, it is a good way to know that the pads need to be replaced. A hard racing pad usually makes a squealing sound when they are cold. When it comes to pads intended for the track, the focus is more on getting the best braking power possible and noise becomes a secondary problem.
